house tour

My brain is a jumbled mess of furniture arrangements.  I fall asleep scouring Craigslist for benches, tables, and rugs.  Our little apartment is close..so close to being "done" but it's just not quite there.  Maybe some paint on the walls would help?  Bulkier lamps, definitely.  I ravage shops for "perfect" items, and to no avail.  I'm either too picky or too cheap (probably both) for anything to come home with me.

My desire for a completed space is turning into an obsession.  I'm gathering design magazine and constantly on the hunt for new stores.  Mr. F comes home and I bombard him with the long list of projects around the apartment I've tackled throughout the day.  How can such a tiny space still require so much work?

I'm anxious to have our kitchen together.  A table, shelves..oh, shelves.  A table is coming soon and will be greatly welcomed!  My cousin is graciously giving us a spare she had in her house.  That means I can start painting at it, rather than at my coffee table.  See those baskets under the table?  Yup.  My studio.

I still see gaps where regs should be, lamps don't do what I want them to, and walls that are not the right shade of..well, anything.  But I also see the desk I planned how to teach my younger brother how to read and the coffee table that Mr. F used to build legos on.  There's the garbage chair from Cyprus that I still haven't upholstered but reminds me of dear friends and the Cal Ranch feed bag from a wonderful afternoon with my mom.  I constantly have to tell myself to chill out and not worry about getting everything put together NOW.  There's no need.  I know there's no need.  Not to mention no money to do it.  But mainly, no need.  I'm figuring out what will help us function better in the apartment.  Life is good here, crazy good, even without the rugs.

  1. So much beauty here.
And good ideas--love the shelf over the bathroom door.
I'm so glad to see that small dresser beside the sofa finally got the right vignette. Layer cake. Just the item needed.
I think we need some rug shopping. Even if we don't buy. Or, like me, buy and return.

    1. Amen to the rug shopping. And I guess this means I constantly have to have a pretty cake and fresh flowers in the house, right??

  2. It looks great to me! I wish I had more of an eye for design, but I can't usually go further than "I like that," or "I don't like that." These pictures look fresh and calming.

    1. Hah! Design is more a matter of using a few basic rules and then playing around with stuff. A lot. Sometimes what you think will work, fails miserably. But then things turn out better than you imagined and it's worth all of the grief (:

  3. Everything does look like it is coming together nicely! I wish I was more hands on with the apartment. I always opt for boring generic ikea stuff. Especially in Cyprus because anything else is so ridiculously expensive and overpriced. I am hoping in our next apartment (in Dubai eeeeeek) I can add a bit more character in it. Although I wont be taking anything with me except clothes. Although I already know there is a good market in the old town so maybe some bits and pieces from there will lighten up all the frames from Ikea I will need since the only thing I can take with me is photographs. x
