july the 4th

it's that day.  that day when Americans turn even more American.  we watch firework displays and parades.  eat hot dogs, hamburgers, and bottomless barrels of watermelon.  and then? then we drink root beer.

except for we are not doing that this year.  (I hope you are!) we're eating huli huli chicken made inside while drinking cranberry juice.  no fireworks.  no days off.  definitely no root beer.  but still awesome.  in fact, our plans more normal to me.  my traditional fourth of july includes eating babaganoush and hummus while playing soccer with two of the most darling Lebanese boys you will ever meet.  this year we three Americans are sharing "our" day with a Dane, a German, a Dutchman, a Frenchman, and an Indian.  while eating huli huli chicken.  somehow having a multi-cultural day on the fourth makes way more sense to me than root beer.

tomorrow, however, is when I'll really be missing that sweet, sweet liquid.

also, I made these fun little decorations ages ago in a fit of glue gun withdrawal.  the vase is an inexpensive (try 60 cents) juice glass from the market wrapped in various ribbons which have been glued on.  the bunting (which, I openly admit was made for Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee) is triangles cut out of construction paper glued to a pretty ribbon.  cheap.  effective.  fast.  my kind of projects!

happy fourth of july, friends!
